A Treatment of a Symptom (2025)
Materials: Scavenged Foams, Curtains, Strapping Twill, Hostile Architecture removed by the artist from around NYC.
A Treatment of a Symptom is both sculptural installation and a demonstration of a way in which one can provide aid to the vulnerable unhoused people in the community. The curtain-foam pad is designed to conform to hostile architecture and other government or landlord interventions that keep unhoused people without care, access to a place to sleep, or dignified treatment. The pad has backpack straps and a tie function for it to be wearable and easily mobile. It was created and sewn together by hand using only materials that one can find while walking around the city and could be recreated by anyone willing to spend a weekend or two hand sewing (likely less with a machine and a bit of know-how to stuff properly)
The hostile architecture was removed from public spaces from around the city, and will be featured in future artworks. This is another intervention I would recommend taking, but involves a few more tools and potential legal risk.
